Adding Hyperlinks (Links)

Hyperlinks (or just "links") allow you to links works and images to other pages or files. Here's a hyperlink  that links you to other information about hyperlinks. You can add a link anywhere you can edit the body text of a page or block.

Create a text link

  1. In the text area, type the text you want to link, and highlight it.
  2. Click the link button in the text editor (it's the one that looks like a small chain link)
  3. Where it says URL type or copy and paste the url to which you want to connect the link.
  4. Click the OK button, and be sure to save the page.

Pro tip: If you're linking to other pages within your own site, you can switch the "protocol" field to <other>, and then in the url section, only place the part of the url that comes after your regular domain name.

Notes about the "target" tab: This tab will allow you to set a "target" for the link - change this to "new window" if you want the link to open in a new window instead of navigating away from the current page.

Notes about the "advanced" tab: If you're technical, feel free to make changes here, but in most cases, you won't need to do much here.

Create an image link

If you've embedded an image into the  body text area, you can also use it as a hyperlink. This works well for images in custom blocks that you want to link to a different page (maybe an event page, or a tickets page, or maybe it's a social media link).

  1. Highlight the image (you can do this by clicking it once while on the edit screen)

Linking to a file

The steps for creating a link are same as above, but instead of having it lead to a page url, it will lead to the file url. You can get this time url by:

  1. finding the file in the file's area, and right clicking on the file.
  2. Select the option to "get info".
  3. From the information provided, right click the "location" link and select "copy link address"

This is the url you'll paste in the URL field for the hyperlink.

NOTE: Make sure that the file is in the main public files folder. if it's a file kept in the member sonly portion of the site, then it will not be accessible to your non-member visitors.

Linking to an email address

If you want to link a particular piece of text to an email address, this is called a "mailto" link. It will link the email address in a way that's harder for spam crawlers to pick up. Clicking on a mailto link will open of a user's default email client and automatically fill in the "to" email address and a subject line (if you add it).

Follow the instructions for creating a link, but instead of pasting in the url, click the drop down labeled "Link type" and change it to "E-mail".

You can then enter the email address, and any other pre-determined message info you want to include.

Some groups use this for their main contact email, and want to make it as easy as possible for the visitor to contact them, so the subject line will already include the group's name.  Keep in mind that the sender can change anything they want about the message after the link is clicked.

Remove a link

Highlight the linked item, and click the broken link button in the text editor (it looks like a broken chain link, or a chain link with an x).
