Barbershop Chorus Setup Guide

Barbershop Choruses

Every chorus is unique, and since most groups come to us after having been formed for a while, you probably already have a particular way of doing things - and that's great! But maybe you're a little unclear on how to start integrating Choir Genius into your group.

The General Setup Guide  covers the basics of setting up your site as well as the available features and functions (such as adding users, changing the site colours, etc), while this article focuses on items related specifically to typical community choirs.

A typical barbershop configuration will focus on 4 main items:

  • TLBB voice parts for members - this allows you to categorize members based on the voice part they sing. Here is the tutorial for customizing voice parts. Here is the tutorial on users and adding users. Here is the tutorial on pre-set roles and custom roles
  • Use of the music library and music learning features - this allows you to upload music, learning tracks, and track leaning progress of songs. If you have an approval process for learning songs (such as uploading recordings for note checking), you can also customize learning states and who can move members form one state to the next. Here is the tutorial for adding music. Here is the tutorial for customizing music learning.
  • Event and attendance tracking - keep members informed of rehearsals and shows, and track member attendance at each event. Here is the tutorial for adding events. Here is the tutorial on attendance tracking.

Other commonly used features include:

  • Mailing lists - make sure everyone stays informed with member mailing lists, or have a list to reach board members without having to make sure you include every email address in a chain of emails. Here is the tutorial on setting up mailing lists.
  • Riser placements - create standing arrangements by dragging and dropping members into riser spots. View by voice part, voice type, height or name. Here is the tutorial for creating riser placements and changing the default settings.
  • Documents - upload membership handbooks, competition information, and coaching notes in an organized area for members and leadership. Create private document areas for your management team. Here is the tutorial on creating documents.
  • Invoicing - remind members of their dues, and even collect payment online through Paypal. Here is the tutorial on invoicing.

Public Site

You may want to consider adding a public site add on package if you haven't already.

A common concern for choruses is gathering new members, and a public-facing website is a great way to garner attention for your chorus.
